Those things which “destroy” the covenant people (false doctrine, apostasy, prevalent wickedness) are going to be removed with “haste” as the restoration is commenced. It will not be enough to remain static in the face of news of the returned covenant. Rather, with zeal and haste it must be spread. In the day the Lord’s work begins anew (this final dispensation of the Gospel) we will see things sped up to accomplish the work.
From the time in 1820 when the work began, through today, the Lord’s hand in moving things forward by speeding up the work is evident. Almost as soon as the Saints were removed from contact with the larger population of North America, work began on the transcontinental railroad. As if to make the point clear to all, the connecting point came at a spot just north of Salt Lake City, called Promontory Point. From travel to communications, from publishing to electronic transmission, all things have moved to provide the “haste” which will allow the Lord’s work to proceed. As He said in January, 1833: “Behold, I will hasten my work in its time.” (D&C 88:73.)
At no point in history have there been similar conditions which allow the Lord’s people to move forward quickly. With modern communication it is possible to remove false notions and false spirits which cause “waste” more effectively than ever before. It is left to the individual Saints, however, to decide just how much error they are willing to eradicate from themselves. Although the means have been provided by God, it remains for each of us to remove all things from our own lives which “destroy.” Sadly, we have done less to “make haste” for our part than the Lord has from His end by enabling haste to be made.
